Sony Bravia KDL-32E5500 LCD TV

Sony Bravia KDL-32E5500 LCD TVVersion”wall chart”of the W5500, the KDL-32E5500 enters our comparative TV. Accordingly, given the similarities, one might wonder if it was useful to have it go through our laboratory. The answer is yes for two reasons:

  • The first is that it is always good to confirm the results measured on a model, by making another of similar appearance.
  • The second is that since the test of W5500, our tests have changed: they are more numerous, more accurate and more difficult.

The evaluation of the E5500 is also an opportunity to replace the W5500 – and therefore also WE5 – against the current tv.

Features and Ergonomics
We find a Full HD panel with matte appearance so dear to Sony. Even if the record is less flattering”tiles”with brilliant reflections are much less present … or invisible. We find the standard remote control of the mark in the version without backlighting. The connection is complete and only missing the DVI, SD-Card and S-Video. This mode is, anyway, accepted via one of the SCART.

In our multimedia tests, external drives formatted in NTFS and 250GB drives formatted in FAT32 have been refused. In other words, it limits the reader’s interest in the optical media to use as a DVD player. A hard disk media will be welcome in addition. Finally, the PC mode without password problem with HDMI set to 1920×1080. The delay time for display is then measured at 50 ms, a value just average.

  • Diagonal : 32 inches (81 cm)
  • Resolution : 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • HD compatibility (1080i/720p) : Yes
  • Certification HD Ready : Yes
  • Brightness NC : 100000:1 Contrast Ratio (Dynamic)

Image Quality default
This part is not involved in the final score. By default, the KDL-32E5500 uses the standard mode. It delivers a picture after all acceptable, even flattering to those who can not detect errors display. In looking more closely, one finds, however, the adverse effect of dynamic contrast and color temperature a bit too blue.

Image quality mode Cinema
Just switch to Expert to sublimate the image. Do not worry, no need to be an expert to go into this mode. His only activation, without further adjustment, is sufficient to configure everything. The contrast is so high, with deep black and a nice distribution of light on different levels. Colorimetry is equally fair, with just a color temperature that is too high; 7400 K 6500 K against the expected.

a visual perception is excellent in both HD and SD. This is inevitably less impressive than a Blu-ray 1080p which will put in full view. In both cases, the Motionflow 100 Hz processing is efficient and significantly reduces the jerks without creating too many artifacts. It is not as efficient on the persistence, a colorful trail is sometimes slightly visible behind the rapid movement. Nothing alarming, however, most viewers did not even detect.

More disturbing, the angle of vision is particularly close. The colors are distorted when it gradually moves away from the axis of the screen. Similarly, the black and dark gray and thinning massacre dark scenes. The color temperature remains fairly well contained on the sides, but flies (8200 K instead of 6500 K) if you look at the image above or below.
Since we are testing the Sony TV, you think that maybe finally this low tolerance on the angle of vision that is responsible for clouding effects sometimes observed on some models. That is to say that the slightest irregularity in terms of the latter slab unhinged from the spectator and then let go of the flare. MSRP Our test model was free.

Sound Quality
Overall good, the sound of the E5500 lacks a little power and scope to reach the height of its image. An additional home cinema kit is recommended to enjoy the spectacle issued by the image.

Consumption
With less than 0.1W in standby and 86 W in operation, this version is 32 inches square in the middle of LCD TVs. It is not economic, but it will not blow up the electricity bill.

Strengths

  • Belle image if it remains in the axis of the screen
  • Original design to act as a wall chart
  • Motionflow 100 Hz effective in removing judder

Weak Points

  • Angle of vision very close
  • Multimedia Player anecdotal

Even if somewhat dated, the KDL-32E5500 is a TV performance and aesthetic alternative to the W5500 interesting, especially for those looking for a white model. In the latter case, the WE5 should also be considered.
